Our approach is more detailed than previous studies, in that it takes into account the specific coding/modulation scheme and it tracks the fading process symbol by symbol. It is shown that a Markov approximation for the block error process (possibly degenerating into an iid process for sufficiently fast fading) is a very good model for a broad range of parameters. Also, it is observed that the relationship between the marginal error rate and the transition probability is largely insensitive to parameters such as block length, degree of forward error correction and modulation format, and only depends on an appropriately normalized version of the Doppler frequency. This observation leads to a unified approach for the channel modeling which simplifies the performance analysis of upper-layer protocols.

Error statistics in data transmission over fading channels

In this paper, we investigate the behavior of block errors which arise in data transmission on fading channels. Our approach takes into account the details of the specific coding/modulation scheme and tracks the fading process symbol by symbol. It is shown that a Markov approximation for the block error process (possibly degenerating into an identically distributed (i.i.d.) process for sufficie...

Jamming Detection on Block-fading Channels

We consider communication in the presence of hostile jamming and block-fading. The jamming signal is modeled by a Gaussian two-state hidden Markov model. Both the communication signal and the jamming signal experience fading that is constant over each packet transmission. Under this scenario, the performance is very sensitive to errors in detecting which symbols are jammed and in the estimates ...

Performance Comparison of Symbol- and Bit-Interleaving of Block Codes over GF(2m) on Fading Channels

We analytically compare the word error probabilities of imperfectly symboland bit-interleaved block codes over GF(2m) on fading channels. We employ an approximate fading channel model of a two-state Markov chain, using statistics of the fadeand interfadedurations. The analytical method is based on a technique developed in [2]. Expressions are derived for two decoding strategies; independent bou...

On channel modeling for delay analysis of packet communications over wireless links

Higher order characteristics of channel errors are known to have a significant impact on protocol performance. Two state Markov models, which have been widely used to model bursty communication channels may be inadequate for the representation of some time-varying channels. Although a larger number of states will almost surely provide a better representation of the channel, the complexity of th...

Performance Evaluation in Multimedia CDMA Wireless Transmission

In this paper we investigate the behavior of block errors in multimedia DS-CDMA transmission systems operating over slow fading channels. We show that block errors can be accurately modeled by a first-order Markov process. Although Markov models have been used before to analyze packet transmission over radio channels [4]-[7], they have not been applied to CDMA systems that incorporate convoluti...
